What Sets Marriage & Family Therapists in Couples Counseling apart from Other Therapists in Couples Counseling
Quality couples counseling is difficult to find. Most therapists are not specifically trained in relational and couples counseling during their grad school programs. Marriage and Family Therapists, MFTs, are trained from a systemic perspective. This means that when we conceptualize the world, we see everything from a system. When we work with clients, we see you in the context of your larger family system and track how your family system impacts your particular patterns, your attachment style, and your personality.
Further, our license requires that we be supervised and mentored by more tenured LMFTs. In order for an LMFT to qualify to provide supervision to an MFT in training, the supervisor must take an entire thirty-hour course on how to become an American Association of Marriage and Family Therapist Approved Supervisor. Therefore, our MFT Interns are nurtured by a legacy of highly and specially trained Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists. This training gives us a much deeper perspective when it comes to couples and relational counseling.
Our Approach to Couples Therapy in Bryn Mawr, PA
When we start working with a couple, we start by creating a genogram, which is like a family tree for each member of the couple. In the genogram, we indicate whether each family member has a strong alliance, an estranged relationship, or a rupture with another member of the system. When two people enter an intimate relationship, their entire family tree impacts the partnership. When a couple enters couples counseling with a Marriage and Family Therapist, the therapist considers the whole family tree as a system. The Marriage and Family Therapist tracks each family pattern during the interactions between the members of the couple to notice and mirror back the systemic patterns from a broader perspective. This is very helpful for couples as they embark on their counseling journey.
Making Quality Therapy Accessible
Training to become a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist is a rigorous and intensive feat. LMFT training programs are top-notch and require a concerted amount of effort, time, and finances to complete. Because of the nature of the specialized training to become LMFTs, couples counseling fees can sometimes be significant. Fortunately, quality couples counseling can be accessible through MFT Interns.
Introducing our Jefferson MFT Interns
This year, we have the honor of working with two Marriage and Family Therapy Interns from Thomas Jefferson Masters Program in Philadelphia. Our interns, Blythe and Antoinette, will be working closely with their direct supervisor, Dr. Gwenn Swift, LMFT. Gwenn will be providing specialized training for them at their start in January, working with them every week, both collectively and individually for weekly supervision.
Gwenn will hear the specifics of every case and will direct them on how to work with all of the nuances of their couples, families, and individuals. As an AAMFT Approved Supervisor and LMFT, I will also be meeting with the MFT Interns regularly. I will listen to their cases and support them in implementing the strategies and interventions they’re learning in their Jefferson program. Additionally, our tenured and experienced MFT Specialist, Yolanda Cucinotta, will be consulting on their cases regularly as well. Yolanda can also offer her expertise and insights. These affordable couples counselors at Spilove Psychotherapy are also supervised and monitored by their Jefferson professors. This comprehensive approach allows our interns and clients to benefit from the long legacies of many other MFTs and their collective wisdom and experience.
Low Fee Couples Counseling
This rigorous training and supervisory program makes high-quality couples therapy very affordable. Counseling sessions with our MFT interns are accessible through a low fee of $100 per 50-minute session. Couples benefit financially from low-cost couples counseling with interns. Couples also receive wisdom and experience from licensed and experienced supervisors.
