What is EMDR Therapy & Who Can Benefit from EMDR?
In our City of Brotherly Love, we have so much to offer and see. The streets of Rittenhouse Square are filled with holiday lights and decor. The storefronts on Walnut and Chestnut streets are adorned with beautiful displays of color and light. Parc and DiBruno Brothers are filled and bustling with patrons connecting to this time of warmth and holiday cheer. While some of us are delighted with the season and feeling connected to the warmth, others are struggling and feeling lonely. Those crowds of people are reminders that we lost someone. Our lives have changed significantly.
Who can benefit from EMDR Therapy in Philadelphia?
Maybe you’re in an abusive relationship, feeling trapped and wanting out, but with no place to go. Perhaps you had a traumatic event several years back, but now there are triggers about it at every turn. Your friends have tried to help, but they just don’t get it. Your family is worried and you carry that too. If only you could get past the triggers and push them aside, then you’d be able to show up with integrity. If only you could make all the noise in your head go away, then you could be the sister or mother you see yourself as, it’s just right out of reach. Those fast paced thoughts, the body tension, the flashes of memories, they just keep coming up when you least expect it and you can’t seem to keep them quiet.
What is EMDR Therapy in Philadelphia?
We have a method of therapy that has been proven to work in reducing PTSD and grief and loss symptoms. EMDR is a specific protocol where we target your upsetting memories, one at a time, connect them with your negative beliefs, and help your brain and system to reprocess those memories until there is no longer a charge in your body or your mind around them. Through bilateral stimulation and a safe container, we can help you to resolve the trauma that has been haunting you and standing in your way of finding peace in yourself and in your relationships.

How Does EMDR Work?
EMDR Therapy in Philadelphia
An EMDR session can take anywhere from 50 minutes to several hours, but many are very successful within 90 minutes to tackle an entire memory. Often, memories are tangled and tied to other memories. Like fingers on a hand, EMDR can help your system direct attention to the main memory (the palm) and then follow each finger where it goes, shooting off from that central memory. Once complete, the main memory will reduce from a 10 out of 10 upsetting to a 1 or sometimes a zero of upsetting intensity. In less than two hours, we can often help your system to integrate the difficulties and help your body to hold them differently. You will still remember the memory, but it will lose most of its charge.
