Words From a Fellow Parent by Tiffany Spilove, LMFT
Being a parent is hard! There really is no instruction manual. I’ve read the books and used my intuition and spoken to other wise, sage mothers who I respect greatly, but at the end of the day, sometimes I find myself overwhelmed and feeling like I wish I had a guide to make sure I am doing it “right”. And obviously, there is no “right”, but there really are some days when my toddler is screaming and tantruming and I know it’s my job to teach her how to regulate her feelings and soothe her and help guide her through the emotional roller coaster she is experiencing, but I just don’t know exactly how.
Sometimes, I question myself as a parent:
Do I give her a time-out? What do I do when she won’t sit in time out? How do we repair the hurt feelings after? How do I teach her how to be a kind human who shares? Is what she is doing “normal”? I don’t want to bombard my pediatrician with all my questions and sometimes other mothers don’t have my answers either. That’s when I find myself wanting to turn to an expert in child psychology.
I need parenting help
Do you ever find yourself wanting parenting help? Supportive, affirmative but clear and concise “how-to’s” on how to be the best parent to your child? Do you worry that if you don’t get some kind of support, that you’ll screw your kid up? I know I certainly do.
The value of a child psychology expert
That’s why I was so excited when we were able to bring Alli Domers onto the team here at Spilove Psychotherapy. We’d never had a child expert before, but we have certainly had many parents in need of help with their kids, myself included!
Alli has a way with children (and parents) of being kind and gentle, yet assertive and firm. I’ve never felt judged by her and have felt only that she LOVES what she does and has gotten all the education to be the very best at child psychology. Alli provides short, tolerable sessions for children ages 3-12 where they get to pick one hard thing to work on and other fun things to do in order to maintain their attention and stamina. Afterall, how can we expect their little brains and emotional systems to be able to tolerate long, chatty sessions? I know my toddler would never be able to tolerate that! Alli gets it! She also works closely with parents and family systems to help teach families how to best support their little ones.
