EMDR Therapy
EMDR Therapy
Have you ever been in a conversation with a loved one? Maybe during a meeting at work or while sitting at a restaurant? And you have noticed an overwhelming feeling in your body.
Have you ever experienced an intense tightness in your chest?
Maybe you have experienced a wave of emotional reactivity that feels unexpected?
You may have a memory from your past Self that is “stuck” in your neural networks.
Oftentimes, challenging or traumatic moments that we have gone through will overwhelm our system which inhibits our brain’s ability to properly process that memory. Ultimately, there is a disconnect between what we actually experienced in that moment and what our brain stored which causes a ‘trauma’ wound.
The brain becomes wounded and that wound, has not had the space it needs to heal.
In future experiences that are similar to the trauma we experienced, we wind up reacting not to what is happening to what is in front of us but instead based on this past experience because that wound that has yet to heal is opened again.
With EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), therapist and client develop a therapeutic relationship through which you are able to reprocess this “stuck” memory, unlock new opportunities to react differently to your environment and heal the trauma wound. Through a guided experience, you can find a safe way to reprocess your memories from a negative event and change the way that this memory is stored in the brain.
Healing can look different for many, and EMDR is a tool that allows your brain to do the work.
